I grew up in a coal mining town where my father was the boot and shoe repairer. I remember watching him hammer the metal studs into the soles of miners' boots. I the early mornings I would wake and hear those boots, worn by the colliery men, clattering down the pavement as they went to work, carrying their snap tin.
