Echoes of Scotland

Echoes of Scotland
The old songs resound in these new hills
We dance the old kilted dances still
And for every ship that to these shores comes
New glens echo with the pipes and the drums
We left Scotia and travelled the great southern oceans
And we crossed the Atlantic wide
But though we have settled these far distant shores
In our hearts you will ever abide
We sailed on the tall ships all timber and canvas
Boarded the great liners from the steel ship yards
Took all we could carry, enough to get by on
At times the going was hard, oh oh hard.
Instrumental
It’s the same moon, but a different constellation
The same sun shines in these foreign skies
The same old earth, just a different location
The same heart beating down the generation lines
It’s the same old heartbeat
The pipes and the drums
The pipes and the drums

Sometimes She Wonders

SOMETIMES SHE WONDERS
Sometimes she wonders, where did the babies go?
She finds herself wondering about the babies
Rosebud mouth, perfect tiny fingers
Nappies on the line, everything fine
Sometimes she wonders, where did the children go?
She finds herself wondering about the children
Off to school first day wide eyed
Last day teenage-wise and a little wild
All the house is silent there's no one breathing
No footsteps creaking on the floor
(Just the) old clock steadily ticking
Sometimes she wonders, where did her dream man go?
She catches herself wondering about the dream
Flew her to the moon exploding through the clouds
Escape the atmosphere then headed for the sun
Sometimes she wonders, where did the time go?
Looking back down the years …
Picture on the wall, china on the shelf
Letters in the drawer, tied in ribbons of blue
Just when she thought she had life comfy she finds the armchair empty
So many words unspoken (and) books unread
Just the old clock steadily ticking

The things they didn’t get done, didn’t get done
Before the bailiff came to call, came to call

Finding Home

Finding Home
Over there, I don’t have to try too hard
Among my own, my heart is free
It’s the place where I don’t have to prove anything
Finding home, I can just be.
There’s cousin Jean and Aunt Ella
Taking tea and reminiscing
Over frozen moments photographed and fading
Great grandpa’s work boots polished up
And the dog at his knee
Shed a tear for the loved ones
No longer here and waiting
Finding home, I can feel my mother there
Though her ashes lie strewn beneath some distant tree
Now I know what left the chimney on that day
Was her spirit heading home across the sea
And they’re singing songs of lochs and glens
And highlands far away
Roamin’ in the gloamin’
Gangin’ hame tae Mingulay
Tak’ the high road, tak’ the low road
Tak’ yer lassie tae Glen Shee
The bonnie banks and braes
The far Cuillins call tae me.
I can hear Aunt Mary play the bagpipes still
Even though she’s just turned eighty eight
Uncle Bobby, scything weeds down by the roadside
And the weans swinging on the gate
Chickens running in the yard
Jenny standing in the doorway
And the baby on his Grandpa’s knee
Aunt Martha churning butter
And the men out making hay
That’s the way things always used to be
The journey taken many years ago
Migration half a world from home
The circle now has been completed
And I’m safe, here among my own
No matter where I roam
Finding home.

AVIS
I was born I had a mother
In a castle with a cat
She took me walking
in a place where seagulls wheel overhead and clouds feather the sky
and the ocean stretches out as far as you can see
Is it the roll of the dice, the flip of a coin that decides?
Somehow I lost my mother
Between the castle and the shop
And they took me into care. That’s what they choose to call it
But no proper family
Just hospitals for me
and an endless chain of change and punishments and laundry work
Is it the roll of the dice, the flip of a coin that decides?
Long corridors, locked doors and windows
Radios in cages, jackets with long sleeves and buckles
Electrodes on my temples
Somehow they got inside my head
And muddled it around
Said it couldn't have been that way - not a Mum in a castle
Perhaps a picture on a wall
Somewhere when I was small
Better settle down and just accept that this would be my life
Is it the roll of the dice, the flip of a coin that decides?
Found a place of sanctuary
In the space beneath the floor
That I shared with wild cats and other twilight dwellers
Or escape down to the tracks
Squashed pennies and hurry back
Smash a window for a dare -more punishments and laundry work
Is it the roll of the dice, the flip of a coin that decides?
Unfit to inhabit the world
Time passed is gone forever
Somehow I found my brother and the others - my real family
And the place where my mother used to be
A flat in Cargill's castle
In a place where seagulls wheel overhead
And clouds feather the sky
And the ocean stretches out every bit as far as I can see
It’s the stroke of the pen, the curl of the sneer, the turned-away head, perhaps ignorance and fear that decides
I was born, I had a mother.
